AC43 Gallery debuted our latest publication, Anthony Chua Say Hua. The 64-page monograph contains about 48 artwork illustrations and is a first-ever compilation of the creative ideas and techniques that inform Chua’s artistic philosophy and practice over the years. This occasion was celebrated by an official book launch accompanied by paintings on display on 2nd December, Saturday, 3 pm. Chairman of National Heritage Board, Mr. Ong Yew Huat officiated the opening of the event as Guest-of-Honour.

Anthony Chua’s oeuvre features different types of brushes, colour schemes and unconventional tools such as peacock feathers and squeeze bottles. He has also proven to be highly versatile in employing smudging, rubbing and layering of ink to expand on the interesting subtleties of ink wash on rice paper.

In conjunction with the book launch, AC43 Gallery also played host to the exhibition, Rhythmic Compulsion: Paintings by Anthony Chua Say Hua from 1 to 20 December 2017. On showcase were 20 works including abstract compositions, shophouse scenes and the artist’s recent neo-cubist treatment of local heritage buildings. Of special highlight is a 105 x 104 cm work titled, 直面惨淡的人生. Loosely translated as “to face the bleakness of life squarely”, the brassy use of colours in this painting mimicking graffiti is surely a clear departure from Chua’s signature depiction of poetic back alleys – the artist’s visual stance reflecting the harshness of reality often experienced living in a fast-changing cityscape. Rhythmic Compulsion was part of Bras Basah Complex Joint Art Week 2017.

Born in Singapore in 1966, Anthony Chua Say Hua is a multi-award winning artist who has been practising full-time art since 1996. An alumnus of the Goldsmiths College, University of London under the Chen Chong Swee Overseas Art Scholarship and former winner of the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award (2001), Chua also earned the Silver Award in the established artist category in the 33rd UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 2014.

This project was proudly supported by the National Arts Council Singapore (NAC).
