Tan Chong Bin found his love for drawing at the tender age of 8. From drawing cartoon pictures, he moved on to explore drawing portraits at age 12. Although a rag and bone man by profession, Chong Bin spent much time in his adulthood observing and travelling around Southeast Asia to enhance his art practice and participated in his first exhibition in the 1970s.

Since the 2000s, he also began creating mixed-media works by assembling found objects (from his junk collection) and painting on them. These art pieces were subsequently shown at environmental art fairs in Singapore.

Tan is illiterate and never had the opportunity to enjoy a formal art education. However, undeterred by circumstantial obstacles, he has happily dedicated decades of life to pursue his passion in art-making. Over the years, he has created series of work exploring the order and inter-relatedness between men and things in our complex universe. His compositions, often executed in a fluid and spontaneous style, comprise thick impasto and bright, vivid colours. Chong Bin is a walking example of how art has no boundaries; and is open for all to enjoy!
